My Summer Holidays

Well you may have wondered where I’ve been since I was dumped at Sywell during this year’s Fly-UK adventure. Yes I had incurred a minor injured to my port foot but that didn’t stop me helping out at Flylight Airsports Ltd for a few weeks before Brian Searle rescued me and took me home to Lee-on-Solent. I can say I was glad to get back especially when Aunty Jenny stitched my foot and let me play with ‘Ziggy’ the border collie. I was lucky to spend a day at RAF Lynham with Malcolm Barton in G-ATIS, a Warrior aircraft but I didn’t raise the funds I was hoping for to help the children in Naomi House. My luck then turned again as I was whisked off to France as you do for the August break. I accompanied Derek Hall in his Jabiru aircraft which his mates call the ‘plastic pig’ but hey when he got me to St. Omer near Calais where I was in my element with the boys and girls of the Hampshire Microlight Flying Club. The picture shows me sitting outside my tent along with a few Gnomes who didn’t like all those ‘Moules’ and red wine the pilots were quaffing in the hangar.
I’m now very keen to get back to raising funds for charity. Is there anyone out there want to borrow me to raise money?

My time with the Coastguard

Those Search and Rescue boys are certainly busy. During my visit they had plenty of operational flying, continuation training and helicopter maintenance to do. Luckily, as you can see in my photographs I was able to help them to test the Rescue Harness and help them to top up the lubricant in the gearbox with fresh Honey.
I`m off to a BBQ tomorrow as the Senior Guest of the Solent Microlight Group – plenty of onions with my burger please.

Peter Sheehy and me at Popham

Hi,

When I was at Popham last weekend I met Peter, a nice cuddly Quarry Manager who you can see in the picture with me. He had flown all the way from Cork in the Irish Republic to see me. After telling me lots of funny jokes, I thought he would take me to the beer tent for a Guinness, but he said he is trying to slim down to my size so that he can fit into his new aircraft, an Xair Hawk, which he promised to take me flying in at Spamfield later this summer. I was rather hoping he could take me home to meet more of the Irish Microlight community but I was told I needed to meet many more in the UK before going overseas. Peter’s friend Paul invited me to the Solent Microlight Group BBQ at Lee-on-Solent next Saturday where I hope to meet a few more of the Hampshire Microlight Club and members of the Phoenix Flying Group and Lee Flying Association and raise a bit more money for Naomi House. Bye the way, thank you to all those lovely people who supported the raffles at Popham. I helped to raise over £300 for the building of Jack’s Place and I know that the children and young people and staff at Naomi House will be very pleased and thankful.

More later as I’m off to the Solent Search & Rescue Flight today. Bye for now.

Jack xx

Every year Popham puts on a wonderful Microlight Trade Fair and this year I was the Guest of Honour
The first day was very busy and I met lots of new friends, on the second day I made even more friends and enjoyed meeting lots of children. I ran two raffles. On Saturday Brian Searle who won a bottle of Whiskey, and Tom Ryan won a Whip Aerial. On Sunday David Haigh won a Trial Lesson in a Flexwing flying machine with the HMFC CFI Sandra Reid.
My thanks go to all the people who made my visit so enjoyable. I am particularly grateful to that nice man Dick Richardson who runs Popham – what a smashing show, thanks Dick. The photograph is of me after the show going home for a cup of tea.

Cheshire Flyers are great

Cheshire is a long way from my Hampshire home but the Cheshire Pilots made me very welcome and collected a magnificent £132.07 for the children of Naomi House - well done you intrepid aviators of the North. I took the photograph on my journey here and thought that you would like to see the Club logo.

What a terrific way to fly.

I left my Police friends yesterday in a Flexwing microlight flying machine. What a terrific way to fly.
We took off almost vertically and straight away I had the wind in my hair. It is the most open of open cockpit flying and the all around view is stunning.
One of my friends from the Hampshire Microlight Flying Club, Brian Searle, flew alongside us and took the photos of me. We flew into the Club`s very own airstrip at Colemore Common to meet with Paul Coppin who tells me that I am now going to fly as a Navigator, so I have got to brush up on the use of my sextant.

In the Tower with the Police!

Well, staying with the Police in the Control Tower at Lee on Solent was really interesting. I had a good view of the entire airfield and was able to watch all sorts of aircraft coming and going. I also managed a go in the Police Aeroplane thanks to Captain Chris Terry who you can see just behind me in the photograph. Even the Chief Constable Alex Marshall popped in to see me. He was very interested in Naomi House and the work of the members of Hampshire Microlight Flying Club. I am now off on my travels in a Flexwing aircraft , hope that does not mean I have to help flap them up and down!

Flying in a Glider - What fun

I went gliding! What a fantastic experience! I was welcomed by CFI Ben Bennett who explained the controls and showed me around the aircraft and then I was introduced to my pilot John Trevell.
We were winched into the air and John flew around explaining about lift and thermals and soaring, all too soon we made a slow graceful turn onto a soft grass landing. Not only did I fly that day but I also got to drive their tractor and support bus. A really good day and a huge thankyou to everyone in the Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club for looking after me so well.
Apparently the Police have asked to see me in the Tower – not sure if that's a good thing or not, I`ll let you know…

At the Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club Dinner-Dance

What a super night!
Those smashing people from the Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club invited me to their annual dinner/dance at HMS COLLINGWOOD. Mandy and Tony World organised a raffle for Naomi House and they raised a fantastic £301. The prizes were magnificent. Helen and Nigel Gunner won two Helicopter Flights around Portsmouth donated by Captain Mike Burns of ATLAS Helicopters. Alan Davis won a Pleasure Flight in a Flexwing Microlight donated by CFI Sandra Reid from Old Sarum Aerodrome. Nicky and Graham Annells won a flight in a PA28 aircraft donated by Jon Butts of the Lee Flying Association.
The food was great, the dancing lively but it was the warm welcome from all the people in the Gliding Club that will stay with me for a very long time – thank you everyone.

Jack leaves Naomi House to go on his travels

Today, I said farewell to the children and staff at Naomi House as the time had come for me to fly off on my travels to raise funds for this very important place.
Unfortunately it was very windy today, so instead of flying I was collected in a posh, red, vintage car. I met Hilary Dukes a member of the staff who showed me and my friends around the Hospice and its grounds. They even let me play in the 'Ball Pool' with the 'grown ups' and ride on the swings and play in the garden. The Chief Executive, Ray Kipling gave me some badges to wear on my flying suit.

Tomorrow I am off to the Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club dinner dance so I will have to behave, although, I understand, they let you dance on the tables if you drink lots of lemonade.
Having met lots of thoroughly deserving children, during my visit to Naomi House, I am determined, with your help, to raise money to help Hilary and her friends to complete 'Jacks Place'. If you see me on my travels please help.

I got back from Damyns Hall today, where Rob, the boss at Ozee Flying Suits, fitted me out with a cosy blue flying suit as I plan to fly in 'Weight Shaft' microlights soon and I'm told they do not have heaters. Went to try a part built Eurostar this afternoon, near Southampton. Lovely looking aeroplane. Geoff Bevis and his wife Margo, the builders, made me a nice cup of coffee and then let me sit in the machine whilst Geoff ran the engine for the first time. Ruffled the ears a little, but Geoff seemed happy that there were no leaks or problems. He's promised me a go in this nice aeroplane when it gets some wings.
Hey, I'm looking for a pair of flying boots and a nice flying helmet. Is there anyone out there who may be able to help me out? I have very small feet but a large head.
Bye for now,
Jack

Getting Ready for my Adventure

Well, its 28 February 2009 and I`ve just landed at Damyns Hall which is east of London and near the River Thames.
Paul Coppin flew me up here in a C42 from Lee on Solent, I was a little nervous but settled down eventually.
I`m very excited because today I am being measured up for my flying suit and have met Rob from OZEE http://www.ozee.co.uk/ who is going to make it for me. I have also met his whole family and Paul managed to take his children for a short flight around the airfield, they were less nervous than I was!

Coming to Life

Hello, I am Pilot Jack, a member of the Hampshire Microlight Flying Club and the only bear licensed to fly in any aeroplane in the world. This year I plan to fly all around the country to raise money for those wonderful young people who live in Naomi House Childrens Hospice at Winchester

Supported by everyone in the HMFC http://www.hmfclub.com/ , my friends in the aviation community and hopefully by you, I know it will be possible bring a little more sunshine into the children’s lives. If you see me on my travels please say hello, have your photograph taken with me, sign my log book, but most of all please dig deep in your pocket and help me to help the children.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Naomi House Children’s Hospice (Wessex Children's Hospice Trust) gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Now, has anyone seen my two uncles Teddy and Paddington ?
